EMS Resorces Environmental Management Systems:
K-State is home to a Public Entity Environmental Management System Resource (PEER) Center, one of 11 nationwide, promoting regional environmental management system (EMS) expertise.
As a PEER Center, we provide a broad array of information and tools to help organizations, especially public entities, understand and adopt EMSs for their operations. The PEER Center is a collaboration between the Office of Water at U.S. EPA and the Global Environmentand Technology Foundation (GETF).
More information on EMSs for public entities can be found at www.peercenter.net EMS Publications Case studies Covers the P2 intern projects from the summer of 2006. Projects included systematically auditing and repairing air leaks, using scrap carbon black for fuel, and eliminating unnecessary chemicals for Columbian Chemicals Company, an erosion control project resulting in more than 1 million pound reduction in sludge generated annually for Frontier El Dorado Refining Company, lighting replacement project for Haldex Braking Controls Division, and daylight sensors and on-site recycling, plus research on alternative fuels for Monarch Cement Company. Fact Sheet How a business can approach waste to improve profits and reduce pollution, including creating awareness and incentives, prioritization of P2 projects, and a list of resources. Newsletter workshop Workshop presents basic information on what an environmental management system is, the ISO 14001 standard, and how to implement and audit the system at your facility. Agriculture Training Tool The Home*A*Syst self-assessment program helps home-owners and home-based businesses evaluate their home and property for various pollution and health risks. Topics include home-based occupations and hobbies, animal breeding, auto service and small engine repair, catering and food processing, child care services, collision and auto body repair, crafts and jewelry making, landscaping Yards and garden maintenance, mobile cleaning services, photo processing services, property and building management, veterinary and medical clinics, wood finishing, and wood repair. It covers hazardous household products, environmental risk management, and how to create a plan for your home. Automotive Repair Fact sheet Comprehensive fact sheet that covers regulatory guidance and pollution prevention opportunities for all aspects of automotive repair and maintenance work. Colleges and Universities Checklist Self-assessment checklist for Kansas colleges and universities which house small businesses or separate operations. This checklist helps campuses identify environmental compliance concerns and pollution prevention (P2) opportunities. Fact Sheet EPA regulations that impact colleges and universities. It includes resources about specific regulations, pollution prevention (P2) practices, persistent bioaccumulative toxic pollutants (PBTs), and starting an environmental management system (EMS). Pollution prevention (P2) practices for university power Plants including fuel oil storage, energy use, air emissions, boiler blowdown, and cooling tower operation. Pollution prevention (P2) practices for vehicle and small engine maintenance operations. Specific topics are used oil and transmission fluid, brake and clutch systems, antifreeze, waste fuel, parts cleaners, waste paint, and paint thinners. Healthcare Checklist This checklist provides healthcare facilities with a tool to help in identifying environmental compliance concerns and pollution prevention (P2) opportunities. Fact Sheet Details the environmental health impacts of hospitals. It also provides information about national programs providing support and assistance, benefits of reducing mercury and “red bag” wastes, and case studies of Kansas hospitals. Training Tool Curriculum for Kansas dental schools outlining dental wastes, recycling, and disposal. It is divided into instructor and student sheets and includes a presentation. workshop Presentations from workshop include energy conservation, environmental compliance pitfalls for hospitals, medical and solid-waste reductions, universal and laboratory wastes, identifying and eliminating healthcare toxics, and using prevention to meet JCAHO standards. Meat Processing Broken Provides background and contact information on environmental compliance requirements and regulations for meat processors. It focuses on minimizing waste through pollution prevention and discusses energy issues, composting rules, best management practices, and environmental management systems. Metal Finishing Manual A summary of the preventative measures and technologies the metal finishing industry can implement to reduce pollution in the workplace. Also details many of the environmental regulations associated with the metal finishing industry. Covers pollution prevention strategies for the metal finishing industry, which can be used to minimize the generation and release of wastes. Information regarding alternative technologies, regulatory requirements, and case studies is included. Other Case studies P2 intern recommended conductivity control systems to reduce water used in rinse tanks, upgrades of lighting with energy-saving electronic ballasts, and energy savings from tank heaters were identified. About $50,000 in savings were identified. Training Tool This manual provides industry-specific information on pollution prevention, permits, and enforcement, as well as best management practices (BMPs) for solid waste and inventory controls applicable to all businesses. Some included industries are the wood finishing industry, auto service and repair, and machining operations. Printers Fact Sheet Provides an overview of the environmental concerns of ink waste and pollution prevention (P2) opportunities to reduce amount and cost of waste ink. Includes a list of ink recycling service providers and resources. Manual This manual is designed to assist printers and print shops in identifying wastes, water discharges, and air emissions; determining associated regulations; and recommending pollution prevention (P2) practices. Salvage Yards Fact sheet Information about resources available to the salvage industry. Some resources described are the Bureau of Environmental Field Services, Bureau of Waste Management, Bureau of Air and Radiation, Bureau of Water, and Bureau of Environmental Remediation. Answers a variety of questions salvage Yards may have. Topics include antifreeze and tire disposal, solvent waste and used oil, NPDES, aluminum recycling, and the spill prevention control and countermeasures program (SPCC) Manual Many topics are covered in this manual designed for the auto salvage industry, including regulatory issues, resources, and a pollution prevention (P2) checklist. Several P2 practices for used fluids (aqueous cleaners, brake fluid, etc) and for various auto parts are also described. Wood Finishing Case studies Case study on how Precision Pattern, Inc., a manufacturer of world-class aircraft interiors, prevented generating wastes and air emissions, saving money and decreasing their regulatory burden. Contact adhesives, painting, inventory control, lighting, and filter systems at wood sanding tables have combined to greatly reduce VOC and HAP emissions, save money, reduce hazardous waste generation, and save labor. |
