Animal Healthcare Practices

Vet clinics like other industries, need to characterize and segregate their waste streams to ensure proper waste handling and disposal. For example, some old pharmaceuticals may actually be hazardous waste, and infectious or "red bag" wastes require special handling as well. Whether or not required by law, regular training on proper handling of chemicals and wastes can reduce the amount of waste generated and the need for disposal. Learning pollution prevention measures can lessen damage to natural resources, minimize the amount and cost of waste, and create a healthier and safer working environment. Resources for environmental training information include K-State University Extension, Department of Agriculture, local county extension, Pollution Prevention Institute, and Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
