Green Lodging
The K-State Pollution Prevention Institute (PPI) is launching the Green Lodging program's pilot year this summer (2010). The Green Lodging intern program is a nonregulatory, summer program designed to link a top-level student with 15-20 hotels in the Kansas City region. The student intern will assist facilities in identifying opportunities for energy, water, and operating cost reductions.
Information for interns
Student intern application (due by Jan. 31, 2010 or until position is filled)
Program requirements:
- Enrolled in an engineering, science, or hotel/hospitality program at an accredited college or university in Kansas
- Have at least a junior standing by the start of summer 2010
- Completed a minimum of college algebra and economics/statistics course
- Be comfortable learning calculations to estimate energy, water, and financial savings, as well as payback on investment.
Program highlights:
- $11/hour during the 10-week summer program (32 hours/week)
- Based in the Kansas City area, working with 15-20 lodging facilities
- Pollution prevention training with practical exercises and hands-on activities
- Work with the hotel and hospitality industry to identify opportunities for energy, water, and operating cost reductions
- Real-world experience and networking opportunities with several lodging facilities that may be prospective employers

Program highlights:
- This program is operated at no cost to lodging facilities.
- PPI will coordinate with the facility to have the intern meet with staff and supervisors conducting a brief, energy- and water-assessment.
- Facilities will receive a report detailing findings and recommendations based on assessment.
